Read-aloud help
DotStar Learning
Lesson read-aloud uses speech voices already installed on your device or browser. DotStar cannot turn those voices on for you from the website. If Hindi or Marathi is missing, the speaker button will explain what to do instead of reading only English letters.
Restart your browser after changing settings
After you install a language or speech voice, fully quit the browser (close all windows) and open it again. Reloading the lesson tab is not enough on Chrome or Edge. Then open the lesson and try the speaker button again.
Windows and Marathi
Windows typically does not provide a Marathi voice to Chrome or Edge. For Marathi lessons, DotStar can download a small offline in-app voice (eSpeak) the first time you use read-aloud. Hindi lessons still need a Hindi voice from Windows settings when one is not already installed.
Windows 10 / 11
Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region. Add Hindi (and Marathi if listed). Open Language options for that language and download Speech. Also check Settings → Time & language → Speech (or Manage voices) and confirm a Hindi voice appears. Fully quit and reopen your browser. In Chrome you can also review chrome://settings/languages.
macOS
Open System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content. Open System Voice → Manage Voices (or Download) and install Hindi. Install Marathi if it appears in the list. Fully quit and reopen Safari or Chrome.
Android
Open Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output. Prefer Google Text-to-speech. Open the engine settings (gear) → Install voice data and download Hindi and/or Marathi. Set that engine as preferred. Fully quit and reopen Chrome.
iPhone / iPad
Open Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices. Download Hindi (and Marathi if listed). You can also enable Speak Screen. Fully quit and reopen Safari.
Chromebook
Open Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech. Open the speech engine (often Google TTS) and install Hindi / Marathi voice data. Add the language under Device → Languages if needed. Fully quit and reopen the browser.
Offline Marathi voice in DotStar
When your device has no Marathi voice, tapping the speaker on a Marathi lesson opens a one-time download dialog for DotStar’s offline voice. After it finishes (about 3 MB), Marathi text can be read aloud without the internet. The voice is robotic but clear enough for learning.
